Poker Table Image
Table image is an interesting topic. I doubt that you could get many people to agree as to what it really means, but they will all agree that it is a very important part of the game. That being said, it is one of the more elusive aspects to my way of thinking. Ask any poker player what his table image is, and he will surely give you an answer. But is it the right answer. By right, I mean is it a description that his fellow players would agree upon. Yes and no, depending on who you ask of course. Ask Mike Matusow, and you will get some outrageous answer. Something along the lines that he dominates his table because he controls his table image. That it is one of his making depending on whether it's a tournament game or live game he's playing. Phil Helmuth is likely to give you a very convoluted answer, which in the end, would be similar to that of Mike Matusow I believe. Daniel Negraneau would most likely say his intention is to be friendly and lull the other players into wanting to play with him, even though their starting cards say they should fold. I could go on and on about the pros. But what is more to the point and affects most people, is what is their image at the table in their local poker room. Again it would depend on who you asked and at what time you caught them to ask the question. I know that there are several players in our local area who fancy themselves as players who can adjust their table image. Some even boast that they can control their table by putting on an act, which isn't really reflective of who they are. I find this line of thinking pure Bull C..., well I don't believe it a bit. I've played with a lot of different players over the years and against many of them multiple times. Especially some who claim to be able to play different styles and create different table images. I have found that down to the last one, they were all full of it. That Bull stuff. Whether you're a Monster or a Mouse at the table is directly in proportion to your innate personality. If you sit and play for any time, it is nearly impossible to put on an act for a long period of time. If a player starts off mouthy, more likely than not, that is a mirrored reflection of who they are inside. The player who sits by and says little to nothing, will do the same thing in another social situation. It is extremely unlikely that he would get up, go out into the bar to get a drink and all of a sudden become the life of the party. When it comes down to a man and his money, the greenstuff and his soul are inextricably connected. If you pay close attention to your opponents, it doesn't take long to figure them out. That is what reading players is all about. It's the player who just sits and plays his cards, regardless of what other players are doing that loses out on some very delicious opportunities. Plus if you don't pay attention to the other player's table image, how are you to know if they or you are the fish at the table. When it comes to poker, people are who they are period. They may play pocket Aces differently at different times, but what you see is almost definitely what you get. If a player is a jerk at the table he is most likely a jerk everywhere else. A nice guy is a nice guy! So don't buy into that crap about table image. Watch what the player does and how he handles himself, and you will get a clear view into his soul and that will tell you a lot about how he plays. It will payoff in the end. Milford Walton
